BOSTON (AP) — A 28-year-old man charged with attacking two women in South Boston, the same neighborhood where police say a third woman was abducted before being fatally stabbed, has been ruled unfit for arraignment.
A spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney's office says a judge postponed Thursday's hearing for Edwin Alemany and ordered the defendant sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for 20 days of psychiatric evaluation.
Alemany is charged with stabbing a woman in South Boston early Wednesday and also punching another woman on Tuesday.
The Suffolk Count District Attorney's office said Alemany followed the victim on Gates Street and grabbed her as she tried to enter an apartment building. After being stabbed several times, the woman said she was able to get away.
Alemany was arrested after going to Tufts Medical Center with a cut on his hand.
Police on Wednesday said they had not made any arrests in connection with Lord's killing but said Alemany had not been ruled out as a suspect.
Court documents reveal that Alemany has a lengthy criminal record going back to 2003.
In 2003 he was arrested for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault to murder. In 2004 he was charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and having a burglarious instrument.
Alemany was also arrested twice in 2010. In the first incident, Alemany was charged with stealing a motor vehicle, having a burglarious instrument, destruction of property and negligent operation of a vehicle. In the second incident, he was charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, motor vehicle larceny, having a burglarious instrument and driving while license suspended.
A warrant was issued for Alemany's arrest in 2010 on assault and battery on a police officer and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges.
Lord, 24, was fatally stabbed after being kidnapped in the South Boston neighborhood and forced to drive to several banks. Her body was found Tuesday afternoon by a bicyclist at the Stony Brook Reservation in Hyde Park.
Lord was a Wilbraham native and 2011 graduate of Bentley University.
Police said Lord may have been on the way to the gym when she was kidnapped Tuesday morning. Police said her car, which was located later, had been set on fire.
