A former Massachusetts teacher who ran off with a student has been spared jail time after pleading guilty to statutory rape charges for having sex with the 15-year-old.
Lisa Lavoie was sentenced Wednesday to five years of probation on three counts of statutory rape and one count of enticement of a child under the age of 16. The 25-year-old Lavoie pleaded guilty last month.
Lavoie, a former teacher at a Holyoke elementary school, was charged in 2009 after she and the eighth-grade boy were reported missing. They were found a week later in a motel in Morgantown, W.Va.
Prosecutors had asked a judge to sentence Lavoie to three to five years in state prison.
As part of her probation, she is barred from having any contact with the boy or his immediate family.
