BOSTON —

A Roxbury grocery store has been closed by city health officials after they discovered evidence of a rampant rodent infestation.

Inspectional Services Commissioner William Christopher said a customer filed a complaint on Friday that she had seen a mouse while at the Stop & Shop on Blue Hill Avenue.

"That's enough for us to send an inspector out right away," Christopher said. "We found it to be unacceptable."

FOX25 obtained the inspector's reports, which noted two dead mice on sticky traps, and a dead rat by the store's trash compactor.

The inspector also noted mice feces throughout the store, including in the produce section, bakery area, and in the ceiling and walls.

Christopher said Friday, the inspector instructed store management on how to address the violations, but when he returned Monday morning, nothing had been done.

"Nothing that he had said to be repaired or remediated was fixed," Christopher said.

Christopher ordered the store to be closed and customers were turned away from the locked doors as employees scrubbed the store inside.

"I'm appalled," said customer Darlene Hodges.

Other shoppers told FOX25 they had seen issues at the store before and complained, but that their concerns were ignored.

"I've seen bread been eaten in, and I've seen mouse droppings around the bakery area," said one shopper.

Another, customer Lorenzo Williams, told Fox 25, "I've told them things have been outdated before, and they didn't do nothing."

In a statement, a Stop & Shop spokesperson said, "The conditions at this Stop & Shop store location are our responsibility.  We are cooperating with the Department and are making every possible effort to address the conditions and bring the store into compliance with our own high standards as quickly as possible."

Store officials also said that recent construction and demolition in the area could have been to blame for the rodent issue.

Health officials said the store will have to undergo another inspection before it would be allowed to open. Inspectional services told FOX25 they'll be meeting with Stop & Shop's pest control contractor and Stop & Shop representatives at noon Tuesday. The inspection will likely take place Wednesday.
