DENVER, Colo. —

A group of Massachusetts senators is on a field trip to Colorado to research recreational marijuana, in case the issue ends up on the November ballot.

FOX25’s Vanessa Welch made the trip to get a first-hand look at the marijuana business from seed to sale, along with local lawmakers.

On Tuesday, the politicians toured a lab where marijuana is extracted. A lab worker explained to the senators how the company extracts fluid from marijuana plants using carbon dioxide.

They also went inside a place where the drug is grown and sold So far, they have been surprised by the many choices people have when shopping for marijuana.

“People probably just think of marijuana being smoked, but they are making all kids of products waxes oils infusing different kinds of edibles. It really is very eye opening,” Senator Jason Lewis told FOX25.

Lewis said it also opened his eyes about how such a product may need to be regulated.

“We should expect if Mass. legalized marijuana, we will see this wide range of products and we have to really ask hard questions about whether these are really all safe products,” Lewis said.

The senators will likely use what they are learning in Colorado to tweak the law if Massachusetts voters say yes to recreational marijuana.

FOX25’s Vanessa Welch will be with the senators as they tour a pot shop Tuesday night.

Several FOX25 viewers reached out to Vanessa on her Facebook page and asked if Massachusetts could use tax money from recreational marijuana to fund the MBTA. She is asking that questions and will have the answer tonight on FOX25 News at 10.
