BILLERICA, Mass. —

Two teenage girls were hit by a car Wednesday night in Billerica while crossing the road after school.

Police say the girls were in the cross walk on Boston Road at the town square when they were hit by a driver who fled the scene.

Friends tell FOX25 the teens had stopped at the Liberty Bell to get an afterschool snack, and were using the crosswalk to head toward home when they were struck.

"They were just loading one girl into the ambulance, and they still looked like they were working on the other girl," said restaurant owner Bob Mallock, who watched the chaos unfold from the front windows of his business. "What's scary is that it was a hit and run and they don't stick around."

The sister of one of the teenage victims said her sister had a broken foot, but that most of the injuries were bumps and bruises.

"It's a disappointment, they were doing everything they were supposed to be doing," Selectman Daniel Burns told FOX25 after learning of the teens' injuries.

Around 6:30 p.m. the female driver turned herself in to police. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash by police.

The 35-year-old driver has been cited for two counts of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with personal injury and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Burns said town officials had just installed the crosswalks last year after residents voiced concerns about traffic issues around the town square.

"It's been very successful until today, unfortunately," Selectman Burns said. "The most important thing is for drivers to be more alert and paying attention."
