PROVIDENCE, RI (FOX25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A Syrian national living in Cambridge is facing charges for allegedly selling millions of dollars worth of contraband cigarettes.

Mohamad Mohamad, 35, allegedly admitted to selling the cigarettes inside a Providence, R.I. federal courtroom on Thursday. Investigators estimate that Mohamad’s sales deprived Rhode Island of over $500,000 in cigarette tax revenue.

The Cambridge resident was one of four people arrested in Nov. 2011 following an investigation spanning across five states. During the investigation, it was allegedly revealed that Mohamad would travel to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia to buy the cigarettes for resale in Rhode Island.

Mohamad faces up to five years in prison and is set for sentencing on April 27.
