NASHUA, N.H. (FOX25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - The man whose wife was hacked to death and daughter maimed in a New Hampshire home invasion is testifying in the first murder trial in the case.
David Cates, an engineer, was in Maryland on business when the attacks occurred Oct. 4, 2009.
He said he used to travel for work about 26 times a year before the home invasion. Now he does not travel.
Cates said his now 12-year-old daughter needs him to be home and that he needs to be with her.
He said he and his wife, Kimberly, were married in 1997. Jaimie is their only child.
Murder defendant Steven Spader is alternately looking at Cates as he testifies and looking at paperwork with his lawyers.
Spader, who prosecutors say seemed determined to kill, remained expressionless Tuesday as the doctor described a forehead wound so deep it carved into Jaimie's skull.
