SALISBURY (AP) - A former Massachusetts police chief remains free after facing arraignment on charges he stole from crime scenes.

Former Salisbury Chief David L'Esperance was allowed to remain free on personal recognizance after a brief appearance Monday in Newburyport District Court at which not guilty pleas to four counts of larceny were entered on his behalf. He was told to return to court on Aug. 8.

The 51-year-old L'Esperance resigned in January after an independent investigation alleged he traded drugs for sex from women facing criminal charges. The charges he faced Monday are not related to those allegations.

L'Esperance is a former Seabrook, N.H. resident who now lives in Lynn.

The Newburyport Daily News says neither L'Esperance nor his attorney had a comment following the arraignment.
