SOMERVILLE, Mass. (AP) -
A 21-year-old Somerville man has been ordered held on $5,000 bail on allegations that he was driving drunk and speeding when his sedan crashed and killed two 16-year-old passengers.
Kenneth Belew was arraigned Monday in Somerville District Court. A plea of not-guilty was entered on his behalf on charges of negligent motor vehicle homicide by operation under the influence of alcohol, as well as operating under the influence, negligent operation and speeding.
Belew appeared in court three day after the crash killed two girls on McGrath Highway in Somerville. Mayara Alves of Everett was pronounced dead at the scene. Isabela DaSilva of Somerville died over the weekend from her injuries. Three other passengers suffered minor injuries.
Belew's attorney, Emily Karstetter, said the incident "is a tragedy" and declined further comment.
