BOSTON - It's a government list you want to be on. You’ve probably thumbed through it yourself before. More than 40,000 names are on the state treasurer’s abandoned property list: Nina Smith, Walter Atwood, David Ortiz … and Maria Stephanos.

Maria decided to check it out and found $583.12 waiting to be claimed. She had $5 from Sturdy Memorial Hospital, $35 from Caritas Norwood Hospital and $543.12 from Liberty Mutual.

After seeing the story, FOX25's Idol Guy Nick Dussault went online and found he was owed more than $100.

It is estimated that one person in every 10 has abandoned property in Massachusetts, according to State Treasurer Tim Cahill's office.

Cahill said one resident was able to claim over $400,000.
