LAWRENCE - A plan by Lawrence school Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy to make up a snow day by holding classes on Good Friday is drawing fire.

Good Friday, which falls on April 10, is of significant to Christians because it marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Statement:

"School commitee has about 5 options that we are exploring and one is the possibility of Good Friday. There are also some days at the end of June to use and those are what we are leaning towards. Of course we assume we'll have a few more snowstorms, but we are trying to be proactive. At this point it's a wait and see on what Mother nature may do" -Mark Rivera, Special Assistant to the Superintendent

Laboy is recommending that day as well as June 25 and 26 as possible days to make up for five snow days.

Laboy tells The Eagle-Tribune he has few options.

Teachers' union president Frank McLaughlin called classes on Good Friday a contract violation and says he will file a grievance if Laboy follows through.

School Committee member James Vittorioso says Good Friday is "sacred" and the schools will be sending the wrong message about religion.

Member Martina Cruz says many students will take the day off anyway.
