(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown declared on the Fox 25 Morning News Wednesday that he had seen proof that Osama bin Laden was dead. Hours later, he was back tracking. It turns out the picture was a fake, and it now appears he wasn’t the only senator fooled by it.
When asked if the photo should be released, Brown said: “If it's for informational purposes, to serve a specific goal, then possibly. Listen, I’ve seen the picture. He’s definitely dead, and if there's any conspiracy theories out there, you should put them to rest, ok?
He was bold and matter of fact. The trouble is, he was also wrong. He'd seen a fake, and his press secretary later called to confirm that.
Brown released a statement saying, “The photo that I saw and that a lot of other people saw is not authentic."
Brown isn't the only one who was apparently fooled. Senator Kelly Ayotte, a republican from New Hampshire, told reporters an unnamed senator showed her a picture of what appeared to be bin Laden's body. In a statement released tonight she says she does not know if that's authentic.
A third senator, republican Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, also claimed to have seen the picture. At today's briefing, the White House press secretary seemed surprised to hear about lawmakers claiming to have seen the real thing.
So where did Scott Brown see this picture that he thought was the real deal? His office won't say.
