(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - One day after President Barack Obama submitted his 2012 budget request, Republicans are blasting the plan, saying it's too weak on spending cuts.

But GOP lawmakers say they are willing to work with democrats to solve the nation's financial crisis.

Yesterday the president held a news conference to try and drum up support for his $3.7 trillion spending plan. He says there is a lot of money being spent to stabilize our current economic situation, including job creation and replenishing state unemployment funds.

But critics say the budget does not offer a plan to reduce spending in the future. The House will resume debate on a temporary spending bill today, which will fund the government until the end of September.

In other news, he's been leading U.S. forces in Afghanistan for eight months, but general David Petraeus is reportedly stepping down. The Times of London reports Petraeus will leave his post as commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan by the end of the year.

Petraeus has dismissed rumors of a presidential run in 2012. He took over for General Stanley McChrystal in June following McChrystal's controversial comments about the Obama administration.

Rep. Stephen Lynch joined the FOX 25 Morning News to talk more about these stories.
