(Fox 25/MyFoxBoston.com) - It is branded as a lower-calorie, fake fat but Olean or Olestra may actually lead to weight gain.

Researchers at Purdue University fed rats potato chips. Some chips contained Olean and others were given full fat chips.

Rats that ate the chips made with Olean ate more food overall and gained more weight compared to rodents that ate ordinary chips.

Researchers say fake fats confuse the body and interfere with our ability to digest fatty foods storing them as extra pounds.
