(MyFOX NATIONAL) - We Americans love our icons, and when one of them changes, it tends to ruffle feathers.
So when the new computer-generated version of the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl hit the air in television commercials recently, the response to the new hipper, sexier, bustier version was anything but glowing.
According to Yahoo! Finance , the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl joins Betty Crocker, Aunt Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth in giving the female face of their products a substantial makeover. In her case though, the transition went from a young early 20th-century girl into a buxom, modern young woman.
Sun-Maid claims the girl has and is still based on Fresno, Calif.'s Lorraine Collett Petersen , a young girl who was painted with a basket of grapes back in 1915. Her portrait has served as the basis of the Sun-Maid Girl for more than 90 years. According to the company Web site, she was discovered drying her black hair curls in the backyard of her parents' home. The image was first applied to packages of Sun-Maid raisins in 1916.
